One of the unique characterstics of Opuntias is they are made of flattened pads growing almost randomly out of each other. Opuntia cactus, commonly known as the Prickly Pear cactus, is a genus that boasts a fascinating array of species well-adapted to arid and semi-arid climates.

Opuntia cactus is easily recognizable by its distinctive paddle-shaped segments called cladodes or nopales, which are actually modified stem segments. These flat, fleshy pads often bear both spines and smaller, hair-like glochids that can irritate if they come into contact with skin.
